Florist Insurance

Saying it with flowers is eternally popular, whether it’s a bunch of roses on Valentine’s Day or a floral extravaganza for a big wedding. Floristry presents unique challenges, including very delicate stock that can be easily damaged or destroyed, delivery risks, and event and venue issues. To protect yourself and your business, it’s important to have appropriate florist insurance in place that’s specially designed to cope with the everyday risks, from loss of stock to Employer’s Liability, Public Liability cover, and business interruption insurance.

What is florist insurance, and why is it important?

Working with flowers may sound like a dream job, but it comes with plenty of risk. From slips, trips and falls in a shop to compensation claims for allergic reactions or injury, contractual disputes payment or liability claims arising from events to the everyday requirements for business premises insurance, flower shop insurance is a multi-faceted tool to protect you and your business. A compensation claim and the associated legal costs could have a significant financial impact and stunt the growth of your business at a stroke. With insurance from Park, you can keep your budding business healthy and watch it blossom into a real success story.

Who can benefit from florist insurance?

Anyone who works in floristry can benefit from taking out an insurance policy, including:

  • High street flower shops
  • Studio florists
  • Wedding & event florists
  • Mobile florists & market traders
  • Online florists with delivery services
  • Freelance floral designers

What does florist insurance cover?

The range of cover you choose will depend on your package, but can include:

  • Florist Public Liability insurance – To protect you financially against the cost of injury or damage to property compensation claims, and the associated legal costs
  • Employer’s Liability insurance – A mandatory requirement if you employ anyone, including part-time workers or family members
  • Stock cover – To protect you against the cost of replacing stock that’s damaged, lost or stolen
  • Equipment cover – Covers loss or damage to equipment (mechanical breakdown may require separate cover)
  • Goods in Transit – important if you make deliveries or transport floral arrangements for events such as weddings
  • Business vehicle insurance – appropriate motor insurance for any vehicles used for business purposes

What isn't covered?

Exclusions will depend on the policy you take out, but in general, certain events are not covered by florist insurance, such as:

  • Normal wear and tear covering equipment, shop fittings, fridges, and tools
  • Stock spoilage without a trigger – Cut flowers naturally wilt and die, so any claim for spoilage of stock must be triggered by an insured event, such as a flood or fire
  • Theft from an unlocked shop or vehicle
  • Undeclared high-value or excess seasonal stock – These must be disclosed beforehand
  • Incorrect business description – For example, if you do not declare that you offer floral workshops, operate a market stall, or cater to large events, it may affect the validity of a claim.

How much does it cost?

The amount you pay for your florist insurance will depend on your business model, what type of cover you need, and your budget. Your Park Insurance broker will be able to discuss the costs with you and ensure your portfolio meets both your needs and your budget.

Do florists legally require insurance?

The only legal requirements florists must meet are to have Employer’s Liability cover if they employ anyone in relation to the business’s daily operations (such as a delivery driver, assistant, or part-time helper), and business vehicle insurance for any vehicles used for your business. Our top tip: While it isn’t mandatory, florist public liability insurance is often required by venues and is strongly recommended. Many venues will not work with suppliers, such as florists, who do not have the required level of PLI.
