Tractor Insurance

Tractors and other large agricultural vehicles keep a farm's essential operations running smoothly. From delivering hay to the herd to pulling the plough, your tractor works nearly as hard as you do. With tight seasonal windows for harvesting a profit, a continued rise in agricultural crime, and shrinking contingency funds, make sure you're prepared for the unexpected with tractor insurance.

What is tractor insurance?

Tractor insurance isn't just for your tractor - it can also cover other agricultural vehicles. While it's not a legal requirement to hold an insurance policy if your agricultural vehicles are only used on a private farm, it's still a good idea to have it as it safeguards against a range of financial losses. This insurance becomes statutory if your tractors or other farm vehicles go on public roads, even for short distances.

Which vehicles can it cover?

You can get a tractor insurance quote for:

  • New and antique tractors
  • Combine harvesters
  • Sprayers
  • Balers
  • Quad bikes and other ATVs
  • Top loaders
  • Diggers
  • Cranes
  • Ride on mowers

What types of cover are available?

Like standard motor insurance, you can cover your tractors and agricultural vehicles with third-party, third-party, fire, and theft, or comprehensive insurance. It may also be possible to set different levels of these covers across a fleet.

You might like to add other useful covers to your policy, such as windscreen repair, trailers and accessories, spare parts, and personal accident.

What isn’t covered?

Tractor insurance may not cover you against:

  • Normal wear and tear (nor the associated depreciation in value)
  • Mechanical, electrical, or computer failure
  • Damage to internal mechanics caused by materials the machine is designed to process
  • Theft when the keys were left in the vehicle
  • Punctures

Antique tractor insurance

You can take out antique tractor insurance for classic models (usually over 25 years old), whether you work them on the farm or collect them as a hobby. An agreed value will be set because antique tractors often rise in value over time. You can also take out laid-up classic tractor insurance, which covers you during tractor restoration projects.

If you hire your classic tractors for events, you may need hire and reward cover, which isn’t covered as standard.

Agricultural fleet insurance

Even a small farm may own several valuable agricultural vehicles. Agricultural fleet insurance can streamline your farm insurance, keeping cover for your tractor, agricultural vehicles, and work vehicles all in one place. This may also be the more cost-effective route.

How much will it cost?

The cost of your premium will depend on the make, model, age, and value of your tractor or agricultural vehicle. You can help to bring down the cost of your tractor insurance by:

  • Choosing a lower level of cover, like third party
  • Paying annually
  • Offering a high excess
  • Including only experienced named drivers
  • Enhancing your farm security
