What is taxi fleet insurance?

Private hire fleet insurance is a specialist policy designed for business owners with a fleet of taxis, including PCO-licensed vehicles in London. It offers protection for your vehicles, drivers and other employees, members of the public, and even your premises, with all your covers neatly combined under one umbrella policy.

How many vehicles can I cover?

Insurance providers have different definitions for the term 'fleet'. Most consider three or more taxis a fleet, though you can take out fleet cover for just two vehicles.

What does taxi fleet insurance cover?

Taxi fleet insurance protects all your vehicles under the level of cover you select from third-party, third-party, fire, and theft, and comprehensive. You may be able to set different levels of coverage across your vehicles, for example choosing comprehensive cover for your more valuable taxis.

Since you’re transporting and working around members of the public, this insurance also includes public liability cover. This can be used when someone claims that your business operations lead to an injury or personal property damage. For example, a claim could be made if one of your drivers accidentally shuts a passenger's hand in the door or a customer’s luggage is damaged in the boot.

Because you employ staff members, by law, you’ll need to hold at least £5 million of employer’s liability cover. This is used to handle claims made by staff for illness or injury attributable to their employment with you.

When one of your taxis is forced off the road due to a breakdown or an accident, you start losing money. Including breakdown and replacement vehicle covers can help mitigate these losses. To prevent shortfalls from insurance payouts when a taxi is written off or stolen, include gap insurance in your fleet policy.

How much is taxi fleet insurance?

Your taxi fleet insurance average cost is determined by the number of vehicles in the fleet, their age, make, and model, where they run their services, and where you park them.

There are a number of things you can do to bring down the cost of your premium. While it's common to opt for any driver coverage on a fleet, you could save money by having named drivers instead. Pay for your policy annually and choose as high an excess as you can afford to bring your premium down. You'll pay less if you park off-road and have vehicles with enhanced safety features.

FAQs

Is fleet taxi insurance a legal requirement?

Standard car insurance does not offer sufficient cover for public and private hire vehicles; therefore, it is a legal requirement to hold specialist taxi insurance. Just because you have a fleet doesn't mean you have to hold a fleet policy. You could insure each vehicle individually, but it would still have to be with a taxi insurance policy, not a standard motor vehicle insurance policy.

Do I have to take out public liability insurance?

Although the vehicle cover in your policy deals with third-party injuries caused by a road traffic accident, it's still advisable to hold public liability cover to deal with all other third-party claims. Without this cover, you are left to shoulder the costs.
