What is digger insurance?

Digger or JCB insurance is designed to protect this valuable heavy machinery in case of theft, loss, or accidental damage. Your policy can also be tailored to best reflect the risks associated with your digger work, for example, by including public liability cover.

Who could benefit from excavator insurance?

It’s not just businesses and individuals who own a digger that could benefit from taking out excavator insurance. Did you know that when you hire a digger, you may be held financially liable if any incidents occur when this heavy plant is in your care?

Building contractors who own a digger can protect their investment and ensure their site work doesn’t grind to a halt by taking out JCB insurance. If you’re hiring a mini digger to landscape your own garden, taking out mini digger insurance will safeguard your finances if something happens to the machinery.

You can take out digger insurance for:

  • Heavy-duty excavators
  • JCBs and other full-size diggers
  • Mini and micro-diggers
  • A range of related plant, such as bulldozers and cherry pickers

What is and isn’t covered?

As standard, whether you own or have hired an excavator, digger insurance will provide cover for theft, loss, and accidental damage. You can also commonly add other useful cover, including:

  • Public liability – to protect you should your digger cause personal injury or property damage to a third party, such as an accidental impact, scratching a car, or knocking down a fence or wall.
  • Road risks cover – which you must hold if you intend to drive a digger on public roads.
  • Malicious damage – to deal with the likes of vandalism (which isn’t always covered as standard).
  • Cover while in transit – for any damage incurred when the digger is being transported on a trailer from location to location.
  • Continuing hire charges – if you hired plant and it became damaged in your care, you may still be liable to pay ongoing hire charges until it's fixed. This cover protects you against such escalating costs.
  • It’s important to note that you won’t be covered for theft that occurs when a digger is left unlocked or with the key in the ignition. If you store your digger off-site, you may need to take out bespoke cover for this.
