Is Your Jet Ski Insurance Up To Date And Ready For Summer?
June might mean strawberries and Wimbledon for some, but for others, the start of summer is officially the time to get your jet ski out of storage and head to the coast or lakes for some high-speed fun on the water.
Whilst it might be tempting to simply hitch up the trailer and head to the beach, there are a few checks and jobs to do first to make sure you don’t end up literally or financially stranded. If you’ve been waiting to get your jet ski back on the water, read our simple guide to getting it ready for a summer of fun.
Essential maintenance
If your jet ski has been in storage over winter it’s important to give it a good check over to make sure everything is in order. Inspect the fuel line for cracks and the spark plug for rust – two common problems that can leave you stranded on your first trip of the season. Flushing out the tank and refueling can also help prevent build-ups of gunk and corrosion from blocking the line and leaving you marooned at sea, or worse, causing an accident.
Trailer traumas
Once you’ve given your jet ski a thorough check, it’s time to turn your attention to the trailer. Check the tyres are inflated and have not perished over the winter – even during the colder months the sun can cause the rubber to degrade. Also, check the lights and grease the bearings so they run smoothly.
Jet Ski Insurance
With some jet skis as powerful as a Porsche 911 they can pack a powerful punch. Even machines with smaller engines are capable of high speeds and, unfortunately, there have been a number of reports in the papers about jet skis causing injury to others, resulting in some huge personal injury compensation payouts as well as claims against property damage. Unsurprisingly, jet skis require specialist insurance, but this can be tailored to your specific needs so you only pay for what you require.
Although there is not currently a law to say your jet ski must be insured, most launch sites require a minimum of third party liability insurance. And as jet skis can cost up to £20,000, it may be considered financially prudent to take steps to cover its value against damage too.
If don’t keep your jet ski next to the water, it will also need to be covered whilst in transit, and if you want friends and family to enjoy having a go, including children aged from 14 years old, you can arrange for extra cover for additional drivers.
As with all insurance, it’s worth identifying exactly what you need covered and dedicating some time to calling around insurance providers to find the best jet ski insurance deal for you. If you don’t have the time, you can use a specialist broker, like Park Insurance’s dedicated jet-ski team, for expert advice and competitive packages tailored to your specific needs.
