If you’re going to be transporting your horse around the country, or perhaps even further, there is no question that you need horsebox insurance. In fact, it’s a legal requirement. But not all horsebox insurance policies are created equal, and there a few add-ons to your policy to consider which, while they are not essential, may prove useful in your specific situation. While third party, fire and theft are generally included with all horsebox insurance policies, and a comprehensive policy will cover you for damage to your own vehicle, there are other factors which may come into play.
At Park Insurance we’ve helped horse and horsebox owners to get the policies that are right for them. Here we look at a number of horsebox insurance add-ons that can save you significant amounts of time and money.
Public liability insurance – Even if you’re an experienced horsebox driver, there’s always the chance that you could be involved in an accident in which a member of the public gets hurt, particularly if you take your horse to shows and other crowded events. Public liability insurance will cover you against any claims for damages that may be made against you.
Employer’s liability insurance – If you have other people driving your horsebox for you as paid employees then it is a legal requirement that you have employer’s liability insurance. This will cover you against an eventuality in which one of your employees suffers loss or injury and makes a claim for compensation against you.
Horsebox breakdown insurance – Breaking down with a fully loaded horsebox isn’t like breaking down in a car or other vehicle. As well as getting your horsebox off the road and to the nearest garage, you’ll also have to find stabling in the area for your horse, nearby accommodation for yourself, and of course arrange for another vehicle to transport your horse. Horsebox insurance with a breakdown component means that not only do you not have to bear the financial cost of this, but you also won’t have the considerable headache of arranging it all by yourself.
Personal accident insurance – If you suffer an accident while driving your horsebox you may be injured and be unable to work for a period of time. Purchasing personal accident cover with your horsebox insurance policy will cover you against the financial costs of any treatment you require and make up for lost earnings during any period of convalescence.
