A horsebox is a substantial investment and can cost tens of thousands of pounds. But if you only have one horse, there is clearly a limited number of times that you’re actually going to use it for its primary purpose on a monthly, weekly or daily purpose. Furthermore, if you no longer own a horse, what do you do with it? Fortunately transporting your horse is not the only thing that you can do with a horsebox, and with a little creativity you can find plenty of alternative uses to get your money’s worth out of your investment.
A horse walks into a bar…
One such innovative use was recently highlighted in an article in the Worcester News, entitled ‘Horsebox with a kick is a UK first’.
Adrian Jones, owner of Decanter Events near Worcester, recently converted his Ifor Williams horsebox trailer into a unique mobile bar, which the Worcester News says is believed to be the first of its kind in the UK. The bar can apparently be set up by just one person in approximately half an hour, and because it’s on wheels it’s easy to transport to weddings, parties and other events as needed.
Jones told the newspaper, “we’re booked for several parties and we have a busy summer season ahead… the unit is made up of two parts so for a small event you can serve drinks direct from the trailer but for a larger occasion you can fold out a second bar area externally.”
Ifor Williams Trailers’ design engineering manager, Andrew Reece-Jones, meanwhile said, “it never cease to amaze me the different uses people find for our trailer. The model Adrian has was designed to transport two horses… we certainly did not envisage it being used as a mobile bar but it seems it’s also perfect for this purpose.”
Other uses for a horsebox
A mobile bar isn’t the only alternative use you might find for your horsebox though, and with a little ingenuity you might even be able to make a little extra money when you’re not using for your horses. Here are a few ideas to act as inspiration –
Removals van – Horseboxes can carry more than just horses, and are perfect for transporting everything from piles of boxes to bulky furniture.
Holiday vehicle – If you’re into the kind of holiday that’s very active and requires bulky equipment like quads, mountain bikes or surfboards, a horsebox is perfect for taking these with you wherever you go.
Horsebox for hire – You can of course retain its original intended use as a horsebox, but instead hire it out to other people to make some extra cash.
Remember the horsebox insurance
Whatever alternative uses you find for your horsebox, you will of course need to make sure that it’s legal, and that you have the proper horsebox insurance to use it for that purpose.
