Horsebox Heaven: Top Tips For Pimping Your Horsebox
Pimping your ride takes on a whole new meaning when it comes to your horsebox. Whether you’ve splashed out on a bespoke Equicruiser complete with Bose sound system and twinkly star-light LEDs, or are planning some more modest modifications to your trusty Bedford, the end goal is the same. Adding some home comforts will help you and your horse to travel as comfortably – and stress-free – as possible. And the less stress you and your steed experience, the better your performance in the ring is likely to be. Welcome to horsebox heaven on wheels.
Royal flush
The Queen’s granddaughter Zara Philips took the BBC on a tour of her £500,000 Oakley Supremacy before the 2012 Olympics. Whilst some might shudder at the expense, the gadgets such as rear view cameras on each stall so the driver can keep an eye on the horses, offer a practical solution to some of the biggest worries during travel. Other deluxe fittings, such as warm showers for the horses, make it easier to safely warm-down whilst out and about.
Get creative
Want to show your individual and creative side. Turn your horsebox into an artwork with an air-brushed design that will get everyone’s heads turning next time you enter the show field.
Do It Yourself
If you can’t stretch to a brand-new, bespoke luxury model, try upgrading your own horsebox with these simple ideas:
- Use metal gridding to line a wall and maximise the space. Hooks and baskets can then be mounted on the grid, offering you flexible storage that utilises all the available area, from the floor to the ceiling
- Use a hanging shoe organiser with clear plastic pockets to store items vertically. This takes up less space than a box and has the added bonus that you can easily see where everything is. Not just for shoes, use it for brushes, bandages or anything else you need
- Create a lockable area for storing valuables when you’re competing away from your horsebox. And double check that your insurance covers you for items like tack in your trailer as well as back at home to avoid any nasty surprises if something does get stolen
- Get a mirror with a magnetic mount which you can easily attach temporarily to the sides of your horsebox to check your look before you step out into the ring
- Transform the back of your trailer into somewhere to relax by clearing out any muck and putting down a big tarpaulin. A couple of folding camp chairs will give you somewhere to chill out with friends and prepare your head for the all-important competition
